Will It Fit? Check Your Appliance Before You Buy

The most common reason an install day goes sideways isn't the hookup. It's a fridge that's 1/2 in. too tall for the opening, or a range that won't make the turn at the bottom of the stairs. Run your measurements through the checker below. It takes about two minutes, and if anything comes back tight, send us photos and we'll tell you for free.

You'll need: a tape measure, the model's spec sheet (search the model number + "spec sheet" or "installation guide"), and a phone for photos.

1. Measure the opening

Measure width at the top, middle and bottom, and height at the front and back, then use the smallest number. Floors often get thicker at the front when tile or hardwood goes in after the cabinets. - Dishwashers: most need a 24 in. wide opening, about 34 in. high. - Fridges: leave about 1/2 in. on each side and 1 in. on top for air. - Built-ins and wall ovens: the opening must match the spec sheet almost exactly.

2. Check depth, including doors and handles

Spec sheets list two depths: the case and with doors and handles. The case tells you whether it slides into the opening. The full depth tells you how far it sticks out past your counter, and whether it'll fit through a doorway with the doors on.

3. Clearance for your appliance type

  • Fridge: room beside the hinge side so the doors open past 90° and the drawers come out.
  • Range: the gas shut-off or outlet must sit where the spec sheet says, or the range won't push back flush. Gas connections are completed by TSSA-certified gas technicians.
  • Over-the-range microwave: usually 66 in. or more from the floor to the bottom of the cabinet above.
  • Washer and dryer: about 6 in. at the back for hoses and the dryer vent.
  • Stacked laundry: washer + dryer + stacking kit is about 75–80 in. tall. Add 2 in., and check that closet doors and the appliance doors can open.

4. Doorway, hallway and stair path

Measure every pinch point from the truck to the spot: the front door, interior doors, hallway, stair width, any turn or landing, and the elevator (width, depth and height) if you're in a condo. We can take appliance doors and handles off, and take house doors off their hinges, to gain a few inches. Tick that box in the checker if that's OK with you.

5. Stacked laundry check

Confirm the stacking kit matches both model numbers, the total height clears any shelf above, and the dryer vent at the back can run short and straight.

FAQ

How much space does a fridge need around it?

About 1/2 in. on each side, 1 in. on top and 1 to 2 in. at the back, unless the spec sheet says otherwise. Built-ins are designed to fit exactly.

Can you take doors off to get an appliance in?

Yes. We can remove fridge doors, handles and house doors to gain clearance, and put them back after.

How tall is a stacked washer and dryer?

Most front-load pairs with a stacking kit are about 75 to 80 inches tall.

What if my appliance won't fit the opening?

Choose a different size, or have the cabinet work done before install day. We handle the install once the space is ready.
